The Claims Process Roadmap
From the moment of impact to the moment you get paid.
The sound of crunching metal. The smell of airbags. Adrenaline. Panic.
Once the dust settles, you have to deal with the insurance company. If you have never filed a claim before, it can feel like a maze. Here is your step-by-step roadmap to navigating the system.
Step 1: The Scene of the Accident
Before you even call your agent:
- Call 911: If anyone is hurt or the damage is significant, you need a police report.
- Take Photos: Photograph everything. Position of cars, license plates, skid marks.
- Exchange Info: Name, Policy Number, Phone Number. Do NOT discuss fault. Don't say "I'm sorry."
Step 2: Filing the Claim (FNOL)
First Notice of Loss (FNOL) is when you officially tell your insurer. Use their mobile app if possible—it's faster than calling. Upload your photos immediately.
Step 3: The Adjuster Assignment
An adjuster will be assigned to your case. Their job is to:
- Determine Liability (Who is at fault?)
- Determine Damages (How much to fix it?)
Step 4: The Estimate & Repair
You have the right to choose your own body shop. The insurance company will recommend their
"Direct Repair Program" (DRP) shops.
Pro: DRP shops are faster and the insurer guarantees the work.
Con: They might rush the job.
Step 5: The Payout
If you own the car, they send you a check (minus your deductible). If you finance it, the check is usually made out to "You AND The Body Shop."
If the car is totaled, they pay you the Actual Cash Value. This is the moment GAP insurance (if you have it) kicks in.
Conclusion
The claims process usually takes 7 to 14 days for minor crashes. Be responsive to your adjuster, keep copies of everything, and text them instead of calling for faster updates.
