Auto insurance basics
Every state has different minimum requirements, typically
for liability coverage (bodily injury and property damage).
State minimums are often too low to fully protect your
assets. We generally recommend limits of at least
100/300/100 for a serious accident.
Collision covers damage to
your vehicle if you hit another car or object.
Comprehensive covers non-collision events
such as theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects, or hitting
an animal. If you finance a car, your lender typically
requires both.
In many cases, yes. Comprehensive and collision often extend
to a rental car for personal use in the US and Canada.
Always confirm with your agent before declining the rental
company's insurance - "loss of use" charges can still be
excluded.
Rates & savings
There are several ways to save:
- Bundle auto with home or renters.
- Increase your deductible (for example, $500 to $1,000).
- Ask about safe driver, good student, and low-mileage discounts.
- Maintain a good credit score where it is used.
- Compare quotes every year before renewal.
Rates can rise from "rate revisions" across your ZIP code or
state - more claims, higher repair costs, or severe weather.
Credit changes and a new address can also move your personal
rate.
