Alberta Insurance
Unlike BC, Alberta has a private insurance market. However, rates are capped by the "Grid" system to protect new drivers.
The "Grid" Rating System
Alberta uses a unique system called the Grid. It sets a maximum premium that insurance companies can charge for basic coverage based on your driving experience. Most drivers pay less than the Grid rate, but it serves as a ceiling for high-risk drivers.
DCPD Coverage
Like Ontario, Alberta adopted Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD) in 2022. This means you claim repairs from your own insurer, speeding up the process.
