Captive vs. Independent Agents
Not all insurance agents are the same. Some work for one company, others work for you. Here is how to choose.
1. What is a Captive Agent?
A Captive Agent works for one specific insurance company. Think: State Farm, Allstate, or Farmers. They can only sell you policies from that one brand.
Benefits: They know their company's products inside and out. They are experts in maximizing discounts for that specific carrier.
2. What is an Independent Agent?
An Independent Agent (or Broker) creates a partnership with multiple insurance companies (Travelers, Hartford, Progressive, etc.). When you call them, they can run your quote against 10+ different carriers to find the cheapest price.
Benefits: Choice. If one company raises your rates, your agent can "re-shop" you to a different carrier without you having to change your point of contact.
The Comparison
| Feature | Captive Agent | Independent Agent |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | 1 Carrier | Many Carriers |
| Product Knowledge | Deep Expert | Generalist |
| Bias | Loyal to Brand | Loyal to Client |
| Best For | Bundling (Home/Auto) | Rate Shopping |
Option 3: Going Direct (No Agent)
Companies like Geico and Progressive allow you to buy "Direct" online. You cut out the middleman.
